The City owns approximately .93 acre of undeveloped property at the end of Gateway Avenue, within its Plaza San Pablo development. The City is constructing a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Building, which will be leased to Contra Costa County to house the County’s WIC Program, and also other associated County uses. County staff will provide health and nutrition information, education, and services to expectant mothers, new-born, and pre-school aged residents of the community.
The WIC Building is situated along the western edge of the site, to maximize its visibility beyond the edge of the existing parking garage. The building steps down to present a more human scale, as it forms a modest backdrop to the community park, rising slightly to announce the significance of the classroom facing the Wildcat Creek Trail. This butterfly form creates a modest icon to balance the importance of its mission with the need to be respectful of the privacy of its clients. Siegfried is providing civil and structural engineering as well as surveying and landscape architecture for the Design-Build team.
