Project Type:

Parks & Open Space

Providing specialized expertise in trail master planning and design, Siegfried was contracted to design renovations to some of the East Bay Parks and Recreation Districts’ most popular natural surface trails, which meander the hillsides of the Sibley Volcanic and the Huckleberry Horticultural Preserves.

Our understanding of trail usage, user experience, topography, hydrology, and specialized trail construction practices allows necessary reconstruction and improvements that will sustain the trails without altering their character. Our process includes walking the trails with District staff and then developing construction documents to a level that provides clarity to bidding contractors, allows in-field layout of work, and clear measurement and payment.

Specific conditions that require renovation include deteriorating retaining structures that are also collecting and channeling water, uneven or undermined stairs, slope failure, trailbed erosion, root upheaval, trail junction reconstruction (including grade changes, shortcuts, and signage), and partial trail realignment to avoid existing hazards.
