When the existing asphalt track at CSU Long Beach showed cracks and surface delimitation, the University decided to demolish it and build a new, modern safe track and field facility that would be IAAF certified, one of the few in the nation.
The new track layout is 40 feet wider than the old track, creating a variable subgrade of existing asphalt from the old track and silty sand material from an adjacent turf field, which was mitigated by utilizing a cement treatment to stabilize the new track base. The track and D-zones slope to an interior slot drain, which connects to a peak diversion storm filter prior to connection to the university’s storm system The track and field renovation was designed to be a site for future regional and national championships, and even Olympic trials.
This project also won American Sports Builder Association’s (ASBA) Outstanding Outdoor Track Facility of the Year in 2015!
